This easy air fryer edamame is hot, steamy, a little crisp on the outside, and perfectly tender inside. I can snack on a whole bowl before dinner without feeling the slightest bit guilty. It reminds me of those evenings when Brent and I are hanging out in the kitchen, and I just need something quick and salty while the real meal finishes up.
I've been playing around with edamame ever since my first Whole30 back in 2017. Even though edamame isn't technically Whole30, that whole experience taught me how much better I feel when I reach for simple, real-food sides instead of the packaged stuff I used to rely on. It's the same feeling I get when I toss together my Edamame and Broccoli Salad, fresh, fast, and so satisfying.
I love pairing this edamame with teriyaki chicken thighs on busy weeknights, or setting it out next to my buffalo turkey meatballs when friends come over for game day. It always disappears fast!

Substitutions
Coconut aminos- If you don't have coconut aminos, you can use soy sauce or tamari instead.
Rice vinegar- White vinegar will work, but may change the flavor some.
Do I Need to Thaw Frozen Edamame First?
Nope, there is no need to defrost! Cooking them straight from frozen works better in most cases. The extra moisture turns into steam, which helps soften the beans while the air fryer crisps up the outer shell.
Do I Cook the Whole Shell?
Yep! But don't eat the shell! I repeat, don't eat the shell. Just cook them in the pod, then pop the little beans out with your teeth like you do at a sushi bar.

- Add the frozen edamame to the basket of your air fryer and cook at 400 degrees for 5 minutes, shake, and cook for another 5 minutes or until the outsides are crispy and the inside is soft.
- While the edamame is cooking, combine the coconut aminos, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
- Once the edamame are done cooking, add them to the bowl with the sauce and toss everything together. Serve topped with everything but the bagel seasoning or sesame seeds.

- Taste bland? If your edamame tastes plain, toss them with a bit of oil and seasoning before air frying, then hit them again as soon as they're done.
- Texture's Off? This usually happens when they're not cooked long enough. Try adding another minute or 2 to the cooking time. Also, be sure to shake the basket halfway through cooking!
- Sticking? If your beans are clinging to the basket, lightly spray the basket with avocado oil or olive oil before cooking. You can also use a parchment paper liner for your air fryer basket.
Storing and reheating
Honestly, these rarely last long in my house. But if you do have leftovers, here's what to do:
Storing:
Let the edamame cool completely before storing. Once cooled, toss them in an airtight container and pop them in the fridge. They'll stay good for 4-5 days.
Reheating:
- Air Fryer: 375ยฐF for 2-3 minutes. Shake about halfway through cooking.
- Microwave: Throw them in a bowl, cover with a damp paper towel, and heat for 30-60 seconds. They won't be crispy, but they'll still taste good.
- Skillet: Heat a pan, splash in some sesame oil or coconut aminos, and toss the edamame for a couple of minutes.
