Using simple ingredients like shredded cabbage and mayo make this easy dairy free coleslaw a go-to recipe for your next bbq, veggie burgers, or taco night.
This healthy coleslaw recipe is such an easy recipe using fresh ingredients to make the perfect side dish. Classic coleslaw is one of the easiest side dishes to make and is something you can make ahead of time because it tastes even better the next day. I make this to go with my crispy Whole30 buffalo chicken at least once a week. It's one of my favorite easy side dishes.
A traditional coleslaw recipe usually uses a lot of mayonnaise, sometimes milk, and sugar in the dressing. This recipe still uses mayo (which is a healthy fat when using good quality mayo) but doesn't have the added sugar or milk.
Ingredients
Mayonnaise- I like using Primal Kitchen Mayo made with Avocado Oil or Chosen Foods Mayo.
Substitutions
Cabbage- I like to use the coleslaw mix bags that you can find at the grocery stores. They already come with a mix of shredded cabbage and carrots and I find this to be the easiest way to make this dish. If you can't find the pre-shredded cabbage you can shred your own. Just buy one green cabbage and one purple cabbage and finely cut about ¼ of each with a sharp knife.
Vinegar- I love using white vinegar but you can use apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar instead.
Mayonnaise- You can use whatever mayo that you like. You can also make homemade mayo. To make this a vegan coleslaw just use vegan mayonnaise to make the mayo dressing.
Step by step
- In a large bowl, add the pre-shredded cabbage mix.
- In a small bowl whisk together the mayo, vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, dried celery seeds, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour the dairy-free dressing over the shredded cabbage in the large mixing bowl. Using tongs, toss to combine.
- Cover the coleslaw and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.
